The Dalwallinu Community and Enterprise Centre - August 2009
Originally named the Dalwallinu Environmental Interpretive Centre, the concept of this project originated in 2002 by CEO at the time, Bill Atkinson. The original plans had placed the building out of town however as the project developed it become more viable to construct the new building on Johnston Street, opposite the Shire offices. Recently renamed the Dalwallinu Community and Enterprise Centre the construction of this building commenced last year and as seen by the picture below the project is progressing at a rapid rate with the expected completion in Dec 2009.
Construction of the project and modifications to the existing town hall has come to a total cost of just over $4 million and a majority of the funding has been sourced from outside organisations. Below is a breakdown of the funding for the new centre;
Tourism WA | $ 17,500 |
Lotterywest | $ 500,000 |
Dalwallinu Telecentre | $ 31,000 |
Dept Culture and Arts | $ 125,000 |
Royalties for Regions | $ 802,548 |
Regional Development and Lands | $ 500,000 |
DOTARS | $ 500,000 |
Total funding approved | $ 2,476,048 |
On completion the DCEC is aiming to focus on the below three areas;
Community & Performing Arts – Theatre, music, movies, dance, lectures, meeting room, outdoor amphitheatre, library resource, cultural heritage centre, town hall, office space for hire, visual arts, and displays and presentations.
Telecentre – Centrelink, Medicare, IT Services, youth support, TL newsletter, TAFE and Education services, public access internet, LAN gaming venue
Environmental – Wildflower and wattle heritage, research and design industries,innovative industries development, and interactive and static displays.
As seen by the pie chart the Shire’s contribution of $1,500,000 is approx 37% of the total project cost ($500,000 used for planning over the past 7 years). This is a huge win for the Dalwallinu community as a project of this size would not have been conducted without this considerable amount of funding available.
